1969-70 Top 51 -- CBS Marks its 15th Consecutive Season in 1st as Sitcoms, Variety and Civic Dramas Proliferate

Written Marveling at Simpler Times by Bridger Cunningham.

The 60's embodied energy, dance and comedy to offset the turbulent political situation with the Vietnam War.  The genres demonstrate this as comic and musical variety shows placed 9 entries into the top 30, with CBS claiming 6 of those prized tokens.  Need a quick laugh to forget your troubles?  8 sitcoms cracked this range as well, once again CBS coloring dominant with 6 places.  When the laughs and dancing wore off, a new trend of relevance came about with police, crime and medical shows taking hold with 6 helpings running ABC dominant.  Movies grabbed an additional 4 places, and the remains divided between fading fares such as CBS' wholesome Family Affair and fading westerns such as NBC's Bonanza and CBS's Gunsmoke.  Not a single red cancellation bullet punctured the top 30, as CBS saved their rounds the following year for the Rural Purge being instigated by NBC nearly claiming 1st Place.

TV Ratings Guide only has Top-30 data readily available as complete ratings posts are unavailable for much of the mid-20th century.  This same disclaimer was placed for the 1970-84 Top 30 cards earlier in 2017, and TVRG shattered the 1984 hard-data wall in September and recovered complete data and recovered 6 seasons of data.  Thanks to scrutinizing research of older newspapers and magazine publications, TVRG exclusively holds access to complete ranks (and for most, the ratings to go with them) for the 1973-75, 1977-79, 1981-82 and 1983-84.  Stay tuned, as research efforts are ongoing, and readers may be able to access complete 1969-70 data in the near future.
