1979-80 Top 30 Ratings -- CBS Reclaims 1st After 3-Season Absence

Written Swinging Out of the 70's by Bridger Cunningham

Ratings Data prior to 1984 is scarce, to TV Ratings Guide will post what is available and may update overall network ranks and sitcom scorecards when available.

Spring 1980 allowed CBS to shine, as it reclaimed the gold as ABC slid into 2nd after scheduling and production turmoil.  Three's Company was the 2nd highest-rated sitcom, yet a well-publicized salary feud centered on Suzanne Somers crashed through ABC's glass ceiling.  Taxi and Mork & Mindy suffered schedule shuffling, while Charlie's Angels and Eight is Enough lost steam after 4 fast-burning seasons.

CBS sitcoms painted the town, and this chart red, led by Alice and M*A*S*H.  Flo, House Calls and All in the Family spinoff Archie Bunker's place were afforded nice starts, while aged favorites One Day at a Time and the Jeffersons enjoyed sturdy deliveries.  NBC froze blue, as only four entries reached the top 30.
