Making History Season 1 Episode 3 Review

***Spoilers Ahead***

The Boyfriend Experience

Last week's Making History ended on a rather strange note as it felt more of a finale than a second episode, so I didn't know what to expect going into the third episode. One thing about tonight's installment is that it felt a bit typical and that's not what I want from a time-travel comedy.

The main plot consists of Deb and Dan now in the present as Deb struggles her way through and Dan tries to stop her from uncovering his trail of lies. It's essentially the "fish-out-of-water" trope mixed with the stereotypical relationship one. Deb's excitement upon discovering Dan's "creations" has to be one of the funniest moments so far. Still, despite its high-concept premise, it seems that Making History is dipping into a typical sitcom structure, this reminds me a ton of what happened with Son of Zorn, another Lord-Miller series.

I was hoping that the change of atmosphere would get the show back on track, but it ultimately just led it into normal sitcom territory. I still did like the episode's material, Dan dressing up as Cher was very amusing and I loved the introduction of Chris's mentor, played by Ben Vereen, as he gave a lot of great lines. It was also nice to see Hancock and Adams give some relationship advice for a brief moment, those two are definitely the highlight of the show.

Still, amidst the decent jokes, Making History still doesn't know what to do with its premise despite starting off on such a strong note, do they want to be a normal sitcom or do they want to venture into the unknown? Maybe I'm being too hard on a show in its third episode, but the great characters and comedy are there, they just need to have a clear direction.

Ultimately, "The Boyfriend Experience" has a lot of funny moments but when you're in the world of serialized comedy, it's tough not to dwell on the fact that the story didn't really go anywhere and everything remained relatively the same by the end of the episode.
