The Last Man on Earth Season 3 Episode 3 - Review
You're All Going To Diet
The Last Man on Earth can have two different types of episodes. The first is a simple comedic piece that's mostly meant to tide the audience over with some laughs until we reach the ultimate climax of the current arc. The second is a hardcore comedy-drama piece that's usually intense and sometimes emotional. You're All Going To Diet is the former, that doesn't mean it's a bad thing, but the stakes are much lower than say the premiere was.
The episode starts exactly where we left off as we find Pat missing and the group deciding whether to stay or go as there is a madman on the loose that could potentially kill him. The rest of the episode is more or less an account of the gang's nervousness and vigilance as they await the return of Pat.
What works in this episode are the jokes. Tandy's fish alarm system blasting Joy To The World every time someone walks through is the type of hilarious sight gag that Last Man is known for and it's even better in a tense moment when you know it could mean imminent danger for the gang. We also get some rather dark-ish humor as Lewis is subject to unnecessary pain while the group, mostly due to Tandy.
Speaking of Lewis, we really don't get to learn much more about him, but we do get some interesting scenes as he gets tasered by Tandy and then blown up by a landmine thanks to Melissa. Speaking of Melissa, she continues to be on the brink of insanity continuing to practice to kill Pat when or if he ultimately returns.
We end the episode with the gang ultimately deciding to say goodbye to Malibu as they seriously can't live with land mines exploding left and right to the tune of singing fish. The emotional scene that is pushed on us though does not really work. The reason being is that we never really spent much time developing how much Malibu means to the crew and it's ultimately been a pit stop for them as we await their next destination.
It's a nice change of tune as the gang rides off to the promised land, though a bit strange that they left Malibu in episode 2, came back then left again, and it'll be interesting to see where they end up and if they end up meeting new people along the way. Perhaps Tandy will also visit Tuscon to check in on his sports ball friends and a maybe still alive Mike.
