TV Ratings Wednesday, September 21: UPDATED with Finals: Empire Adjusted Up, Designated Survivor Adjusted Down


Finals: In the final ratings, Empire adjusted up a single tenth to 4.2, which puts it slightly up from its season finale last spring. Designated Survivor, meanwhile adjusted down a tenth to 2.2, which is still a full ratings point better than Nashville's season premiere in that timeslot a year before. The table has been updated to reflect the final ratings, while the analysis refers to the preliminary ratings.

On ABC, The Goldbergs started off the night with a 2.0 in its new timeslot. It is up from the previous season finale's 1.9, and down from the 2.4 it premiered to last season, when it aired at 8:30. It was followed by the series premiere of Speechless, which premiered to a 2.0, down from the 2.4 The Goldbergs earned in its third season premiere at that time last September, but retaining the entire audience of its lead-in. Modern Family returned to a 2.6, up from its most recent season finale, which got a 2.1, but down from last season's premiere at 3.2. Black-ish followed with a 2.0, up from its season finale's 1.5 but down from last season's premiere at 2.4. At 10:00, Designated Survivor premiered to a 2.3, way up from Nashville's season premiere last September, which got a 1.2.

On FOX, Lethal Weapon premiered to a 2.2, down from the series premiere of Rosewood in the timeslot last season. which was a 2.4. However, the episode of Empire that followed Rosewood last year earned a 6.7, while this season was down with a 4.1. However, Empire was flat with the season finale's 4.1.

On NBC, Blindspot got a 1.3 in its first airing in its new timeslot, down from the 1.5 it received last week in its season premiere at 10:00 following the finale of America's Got Talent. Law & Order: SVU started off its season with a 1.8, up from the season finale's 1.6, and even with the 1.8 it started off with last season. Chicago PD followed, with a 1.6, up from the 1.4 it ended with last season, and down from last season premiere's 1.7.

On CBS, the 90-minute season premiere of Survivor earned a 2.3, down from last fall's premiere, which earned a 2.5. The season finale of Big Brother notched a 2.0, up from last week's 1.8, and down from last season's finale, which received a 2.2.

On the CW, a rerun of Penn & Teller: Fool Us received a 0.3. An original Whose Line earned a 0.3, flat with last week's 0.3, and it was followed be a repeat, which rated at 0.4.
